What is UHS?
University Health Services (UHS) is UC Berkeley's main health care provider for the Berkeley campus community, and is fully accredited as a health care facility. They offer a wide range of health services to students, as well as connections to resources. Their primary location is the Tang Center, located at 2222 Bancroft Way Berkeley, CA 94720.

Anonymous Screenings for Mental Health

UHS offers anonymous online screenings for a variety of mental health issues through MindWise Innovations. These free screenings are available to all UC Berkeley students, staff, and faculty members and are taken anonymously.

Biofeedback Therapy
-
Biofeedback is a technique you can use to learn to control some of your body's functions, such as your heart rate. During biofeedback, you're connected to electrical sensors that help you receive information about your body. This feedback helps you make subtle changes in your body, such as relaxing your breathing and regulating your heart rate variance.

If you are ready to obtain a birth control method or need a refill of your current prescription please go to the eTang portal and send a message to the Pharmacy.

Prescription-based methods like birth control pills, diaphragms, contraceptive gel, vaginal rings, contraceptive patches, Nexplanon, Depo Provera shots, and IUDs are all covered 100% by Berkeley SHIP. For students with other insurances, prescriptions may be available for some methods to use at a pharmacy covered by your insurance.

COVID-19
-
PCR testing for COVID-19 is available at UHS for UC Berkeley students with symptoms. Results are typically available in 24-48 hours and will be communicated through eTang.

To get tested, log in to eTang and follow the instructions under “schedule an appointment.”

The UHS Fee for a COVID-19 Symptomatic Test is $105 and students without SHIP will have to pay out-of-pocket; for cost-sharing for SHIP students, it is $10.50​.

Home antigen tests for COVID-19 are available for purchase at most pharmacies, for prices between $7 (UHS Pharmacy) and $20.
-
These are rapid tests which produce results in 15-30 minutes.
-
If you test negative, the FDA recommends 2 negative antigen tests for people with symptoms or 3 antigen tests for people without symptoms.

For no-cost COVID testing off-campus, visit the Alameda County Health website.​

UHS is offering the updated COVID-19 Moderna (Spikevax) and Pfizer vaccine to students.
-
Drop-in COVID-19 shot clinics are open to students every Monday-Friday, 9:00-11:30 am and 1-4:30 pm at University Health Services in the Allergy / Travel department located on the 1st floor of the Tang Center on a first-come, first-served basis. You can also get a flu shot at the same time. ​

The cost of the vaccine is covered for students with SHIP
-
For students without SHIP, the cost is $189.50 for Pfizer and $168.00 for Moderna + $30 injection. Students can get a receipt to submit a request for reimbursement through their insurance carrier.

Students can also check vaccines.gov for the availability of COVID-19 vaccines in the community, and/or check directly with a community pharmacy.
Eating Disorders (ED) Clinic

At UHS, ED Clinic visits are available where students meet with a medical provider who has additional experience working with individuals with eating disorders; these visits may also include meeting with a dietician at the time of the visit. No therapy is provided at these visits.

Eye Care
-
Follow this link to the UHS website for a list of common eye problems and few may to manage them. If your eye condition doesn't resolve or symptoms worsen, follow up with your provider or call the advice nurse.

Treatment Tips
-
Hot compresses: A hot water bottle filled with hot water and wrapped in a moist clean cloth can be used as a compress. You can also moisten a clean face cloth with hot water. Hold it against the affected area of the eye for 20 minutes 4 - 5 times a day. Reheat the cloth by reapplying hot water
-
Eye drops: Lean head back, look up, pull the lower lid out, and place drops in the lower lid sac. Blinking a few times will allow the drops to spread throughout the eye.

Gynecology Services
-
If you have a cervix, you may need a PAP/pelvic exam for cervical cancer screening, depending on your age, sexual practices, and family/medical history.
-
For people 25 and older with a cervix, cervical cancer screening with a Pap plus HPV test or preferably, if available a primary HPV test is recommended every five years.

Health Opportunity Fund (HOF)

The HOF provides in-kind support to help offset charges for UHS services and prescriptions by the following registered students:

Pell Grant and Dream Aid recipients

Graduate students who have filed a FAFSA for the current year and have Pell Grant equivalent eligibility
-
Actively registered students in the Disabled Students Program (DSP)
-

The HOF program starts on September 1, 2025, and runs until the funds run out. Eligible students can use up to $200, except for Optometry services and no-show/late cancellation fees.

How to Pay for Services with HOF
-
Immediately after receiving services, visit the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) Office on the 3rd floor of the Tang Center, present your Cal 1 Card, and identify yourself as a HOF recipient.
-
Students without SHIP must complete this in-person transaction within 7 business days.
-
Students with SHIP must complete this in-person transaction within 20 business days.
-

Otherwise, charges are automatically billed to your CalCentral account and HOF can no longer be applied.​

When picking up prescriptions or purchasing over-the-counter products at the Pharmacy, present your Cal 1 Card, and identify yourself as a HOF recipient BEFORE PAYING.

Health Records

When you arrive at UC Berkeley, you may wish to have your health records transferred to UHS from your previous healthcare provider.
-
You can print a release form for transfers of records to UHS or pick up a copy of the form from Health Records. Complete the form and mail it to your previous healthcare provider.

HIV Rapid Testing

​The Sexual Health Education Program conducts free rapid HIV antibody testing for UC Berkeley students and community members. The testing method is a blood-based finger prick test.

These are offered monthly during the academic year from 12-3 pm (the last test at 2:30 pm) in the Health Promotion Department on the 2nd floor of UHS.​​

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
-
HPV is a common virus that can lead to six types of sexually transmitted cancers later in life - you can protect yourself from every getting these cancers by getting the HPV vaccine before the age of 26.

Students with SHIP:

Make an appointment with the Immunization Department through the eTang Portal to get the HPV vaccine.
-
Walk-ins at the Immunization Department on the first floor of the Tang Center.

Students without SHIP:
-
Students with other types of insurance can make an appointment with the Immunization clinic, pay fees out of pocket, and get a receipt for possible reimbursement from their insurance, or contact their primary care physician about options.

Immunization Requirements
-
All incoming and re-admitted students must satisfy TB screening and immunization requirements as mandated by the UC Office of the President.
-
To view requirements and deadlines for immunizations, log into the eTang portal and navigate to the "Medical Clearances" page. From there, you can complete the immunization items by entering your immunization dates and records, and check to see if you've complied successfully to requirements. ​
Light Therapy
-
Light therapy is offered free of charge to students at UHS, on the 2nd floor of the Tang Center, across from the massage chairs.
-
Light therapy has typically been used to treat conditions like Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), however, it can also be used to address other issues such as mild to moderate depression, jet lag, and mid-day fatigue

UHS offers a great list of recipes and nutrition resources on the linked page include low-cost grocery stores, nutrition hand-outs, campus resources, and free meals in the community.
Optometry
-
The Tang Eye Center at UHS and the Meredith W. Morgan Eye Center at the School of Optometry in Minor Hall Addition offer services from routine eye exams and complete contact lens care, to the diagnosis and management of vision problems caused by diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetes.

Pharmacy

Ways to Request Refills
-
Online via the eTang Portal: Log into the eTang portal, click on "Messages," create a "New Message," select "Refill my medication(s)," and follow the instructions.

By phone: You can call the pharmacy at (510) 642-3249, and leave a message on our refill line; pharmacy staff will contact you within one business day of the status of the refill.
-
In-person: You may bring your refill request directly to the pharmacy for processing. However, UHS cannot guarantee that we will have your medication in stock on the same day.

Prescription Transfers
-
Contact UHS either by a message through the eTang portal or by phone at (510) 642-3249.
-
Provide your name, birth date, the name of the pharmacy, the pharmacy’s phone number, and the names of the medications you’d like to transfer. We will then call that pharmacy to request the transfer.

If you would like to transfer your prescriptions from UHS Pharmacy, please call the pharmacy of your choice and provide them with UHS Pharmacy’s phone number and the names of the medications you’d like to transfer.

The UHS Pharmacy only accepts Berkeley SHIP
-
Students with SHIP have a $0 co-pay for generic and $25 for formulary, $40 for non-formulary medications, and $75 for specialty medications (for each 30-day supply). ​

Prescriptions filled outside of UHS at an In-Network Pharmacy have a $20 co-pay for generic and $40 co-pay for brand name medications (30-day supply), $60 for "non-formulary" items, and 20% up to $250 for specialty drugs when filled at an in-network pharmacy.

Sexual Health Education Program (SHEP)

The Sexual Health Education Program's (SHEP) mission is to empower students to feel comfortable with their bodies and make informed decisions about their sex and sexuality, including whether or not to be sexually active.

If you would like to provide safer sex supplies at your campus event, please fill out the Sexpress form for bulk safer sex supply orders.
-
Requests are approved on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Urgent Care and Primary Care providers have limited external condoms available. Feel free to ask for condoms during your next appointment.

SHEP provides FREE safer sex supply samples at all SHEP-led workshops and tabling events.

SHEP tabling on Sproul Plaza happens weekly and offers a wide range of FREE safer sex supply samples.

The Health Worker Program provides free condoms to the communities they support.

Students can meet one-on-one (and/or with their partner) with a trained Sexpert (peer sexual health educator) on Fridays from 12-3 pm in Health Promotion (2nd floor of UHS) to:

What to Expect
-
Assessment of your condition
-
Upon your arrival in Urgent Care, please check-in at the kiosk. After registration, a nurse will speak with you and assess your medical condition. The nurse and medical team will recommend the best way to get you the care you need.
-
If an urgent medical visit is advised, you will be directed to see a provider in the Urgent Care or Primary Care clinics.​
-
If your condition doesn't require immediate care, the nurse will assist you in scheduling a medical appointment in one of the medical clinics or refer you to a community clinic.
-
-
*If you have a medical emergency (for example, shortness of breath, chest pain, severe pain) please let the staff know immediately upon arrival.*
-
-
Seeing a provider in Urgent Care
-
If the nurse recommends an Urgent Care medical visit, your name will be called when a room becomes available for you.
-
Your clinician will work with you to determine the best treatment plan and follow-up care for your condition.
-
If you have an urgent condition that cannot be fully evaluated or treated in Urgent Care, we will arrange transfer to a hospital, emergency room, or local specialist for further care.
-

Wait times for Urgent Care
-
When the clinic is busy, wait times may be several hours.
-
The urgent care clinic is intended for urgent medical problems and has limited capacity.
-
Patients are seen in order of acuity not by arrival time; those that don't require immediate care made need to wait are strongly encouraged to make an appointment in Primary Care or seek care in the community.
-
-
Closing time for Urgent Care
-
Closing time is often very busy, and as a result, wait times may be longer
-
All patients presenting to Urgent Care will be assessed by an RN
-
Those patients not requiring immediate medical care will be assisted by staff to access care within the appropriate time period (medical appointment for example).

Students with SHIP will pay a $35 office visit co-pay​

There are fees for some procedures, lab, x-ray services, medications, supplies, and prescriptions.

The eTang portal is the best way to get in contact with UHS departments, as well as schedule appointments, see lab results, get medical advice, and much more!

You can log into eTang here​ using your CalNet ID. The home page includes appointments, messages lab results, and medical clearances, as well as updated information on drop-in clinics for COVID-19 and the Flu.
